BBC4 unveils Scottish season UK diginet BBC4 has unveiled a month-long season of fall programming focused on aspects of Scottish culture, art, filmmaking, heritage and landscape. Among the programming will be feature-length documentary A Portrait of Scotland, which will see Oscar-winning director Peter Capaldi taking on his first presenting role and looking at the artists and paintings that have changed Scotland. Scotland On Screen, meanwhile, will see actor Alan Cumming looking at classic movies featuring Scottish locations, such as The Wicker Man and Trainspotting. BBC director-general Mark Thompson said the season "will explore and celebrate the enormous cultural contribution Scotland has made and also bang the drum for Scottish creativity." BBC4 controller Richard Klein added: "In the year Scotland marks a decade of devolution, it seems a good time to take a fresh look at perceptions of Scotland both north of the border and across the UK." Elsewhere in the season, three-part series Jonathan Meades: Off Kilter will see the titular writer taking a "quixotic" tour of Scotland, while an as-yet-untitled documentary featuring presenter Andrew Marr and politician Charles Kennedy will look at the effects Calvinism is perceived to have had over the psyche of Scots. The season is conceived and largely produced by BBC Scotland for BBC4, with further programming from independent producers and a special featuring politician Michael Portillo, who chairs a discussion about the possibility of independence for Scotland. Programming from indie prodcos will include Tweed, a three-part series from Bellwether Media, and Balmoral, a one-off doc from Blakeway Productions about the Royal Family's private residence in Scotland and its connection with Scottish traditions. Andrea Miller, head of factual at BBC Scotland, said: "The season as a whole takes a look at some of the perceptions of Scotland in a fresh way. It's great that so many of Scotland's contemporary stars have taken part, including film stars Alan Cumming and Peter Capaldi." Adam Benzine 10 Jun 2009 © C21 Media 2009 |
