Lycos rolls out online video portal

European web portal Lycos has launched a video portal linked to its UK website, Lycos.co.uk.

Lycos TV, powered by business-to-business internet video specialist ROO, will offer a variety of online videos including contemporary and archive content in areas such as news, music, movies, travel and sports.

The new portal will include ROO's video content library as well as original video content from Lycos, which operates a pan-European network of websites covering Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

User-generated content will be incorporated in the coming months.

Using ROO's technology, Lycos TV will stream video content through its website in a customisable way and will also be able to offer advertising spots and new formats, which Lycos says will be developed once the portal becomes established.

Jeffrey Lee, MD of Lycos UK, said today's users demand an "enriched web experience" and that moving to a comprehensive online video content service was the obvious place to start.

"ROO's technology meant that we could get a video portal up and running with a huge amount of video content available to users from the word go," said Lee.
