Roku brings Facebook to TV US video-on-demand set-top box maker Roku is bringing Facebook, Flickr and an array of original web video providers to television with the launch of a suite of channels. The California-based company, which already counts Netflix and Amazon On Demand among the services its devices make available in the living room, today debuted the Roku Channel Store. The move puts 10 web content providers on to the TV screen via the Wi-Fi-enabled Roku players, including Facebook and Flickr photos, plus web originals from Revision3, Blip.tv and others. Music streaming provider Pandora also features. The new channels are all offered for free and Roku plans to introduce more in the future, along with other paid-for services, as is the case with Netflix and Amazon. The firm said a number of companies are already developing services to add to its Channel Store, which Roku is pitching as an open platform for interested parties. "Now content producers and distributors – from single-person shops to billion-dollar corporations – can deliver their content directly to consumers without having to go exclusively through cable operators, satellite networks or TV affiliates," said Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood.
