Studios support PopTok launch Online service PopTok, which allows users to send TV show clips to each other, has launched in beta today, having put in place licensing deals with CBS, Lionsgate and Paramount Pictures. PopTok, backed by former Sony America CEO Mickey Schulhof, licenses content from major film, TV and music companies, editing it into two- to five-second clips that users can add to emails, social networking sites and instant messenger services such as Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. The company was formed last year by GTI Group, JVP and JVP Studio, and is currently mounting a campaign for Series A funding. Recently departed Yahoo! exec Scott Kauffman will serve as PopTok president and CEO. PopTok follows in the footsteps of a number of similar services, such as BlinkBox and Redlasso, which allow users to edit and share TV clips. The company plans to make money through display advertising, sponsorship deals with studios and record labels, and by taking a share of sales from clips it drives to e-commerce destinations.
