Nokia takes mobile TV to Indonesia 3GSM NEWS: Indonesia will become the latest country to take the path towards mobile TV after Nokia said it is to partner with local broadcaster SCTV to launch a trial later this year. Nokia is joining forces with SCTV parent EMTEK to test the viability of Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld (DVB-H) in the territory in the second half of 2006. The Finnish handset manufacturer has already conducted similar trials around the world, ranging from its domestic market through the UK, France, the US, Australia and Indonesia's neighbour Malaysia. The pilot with SCTV and sister company PT MECA will last for six months, the same duration as a trial Nokia is currently conducting with partners in the UK. Preliminary findings from this pilot have shown high satisfaction among users. But so far Finland is the only country to have licensed additional spectrum for DVB-H. In the meantime, competing standards such as Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) are gaining a lead, with Virgin Mobile today announcing that it will be the first network in Europe to launch a commercial broadcast mobile TV service, with BT Movio going live in the UK later this year. Separately, Nokia said it is collaborating with rival handset maker Sony Ericsson to achieve interoperability between DVB-H-enabled devices. BT, meanwhile, is partnering with Microsoft and HTC to launch the world's first DAB-enabled smartphone.
