CBBC to remake Just William SHOWCOMOTION: Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly) has been tapped to pen a new adaptation of the Just William novels, CBBC controller Anne Gilchrist has announced here in Sheffield. Richmal Crompton's classic tales about a mischievous 11-year-old boy are to be adapted by CBBC for BBC1, executive produced in-house by head of drama and acquisitions Steven Andrew with Martin Jarvis as consultant. The period series is due to air on Sunday afternoons in 2010. Gilchrist also unveiled new series Big Babies (26x15'), a CGI and puppetry series about two babies with the heads of grown men for 2010. The show is from comedy collective Broken Biscuits, led by John Riche and Spencer Jones, with Sharon Horgan (Pulling, Free Agents) as programme consultant. The exec producers are Jack Cheshire for BBC Comedy and Japhet Asher for CBBC. Other new CBBC commissions announced at the Showcomotion conference in Sheffield include Inside Life (10x30'), which goes behind the scenes of the BBC Natural History Unit's new series Life; plus a new 6x28' issues-led single documentary strand. Each programme in the new strand will reflect "a different aspect of children's disparate lives in the UK today," said the BBC. Alison Gregory will executive produce the strand, which will air next year. The team behind the Amazon With Bruce Parry from indie Indus Films will make two films for the new strand; one documenting a rite of passage for boys in a Coventry school and the other one about a group of traveller children in Essex. Both will be exec produced by Steve Robinson and Chris Morris. RDF-backed children's indie The Foundation has teamed up with documentarian Mick Robertson to make a third film, about Young Mayors, and Welsh indie Boomerang will be following three children whose parents are in prison. "These new commissions reflect the originality and diversity of the CBBC schedule and reinforce our commitment to working with the most innovative new and established creative British talent around," said Gilchrist.
