C4 backs call for young teen content SHOWCOMOTION: UK public service broadcaster Channel 4 (C4) is keen to carry content for younger teenagers, according to its education commissioning editor Matt Locke. Lord Carter's recently published Digital Britain Review mooted the idea of widening C4's public service remit to include programming aimed at young teens following years of under-investment in the sector by UK broadcasters. Speaking at the Showcomotion Children's Media Conference in Sheffield, Locke said that while the proposal was in the early stages, there was "absolutely a desire to do it." "I'm really up for it," he said. "I've been at the channel for two years now, commissioning a wide variety of genres focusing on 14-19s. "We are only at the early stages; the report only came out quite recently. So we're just sitting down and starting to develop our response, as there was no additional funding given to us to serve that audience," he said. "There's absolutely the desire to do it." Locke said he was pleased the government had asked C4 to look at programming for that age bracket for a number of reasons. "Firstly, because they are clearly under-served by television as a platform, and secondly because of behaviour patterns in which teens are using television and new platforms to talk about the world around them," he said. Locke said the schedule was not currently gripping older kids in the way it used to and would like to find ways of reaching them as an audience. "I want to find out how we can reach that audience, how we can engage them with stories, and how we can get them to care about those issues," he said.
