CITV bucks ITV spending trend SHOWCOMOTION: The only one of struggling UK broadcaster ITV's channels increasing its commissioning budget this year is the digital children's network CITV, delegates here heard yesterday. Speaking at the Showcomotion Children's Media Conference in Sheffield, Emma Tennant, controller of digital channels at ITV, said that while budgets would still be tight, children's TV was the only genre to buck the spending trend across the broadcaster. Declining to give exact figures or budgets, Tennant said CITV had a pot of money that it could "spend at will" on projects and that she wanted to see more "real kids" in preschool slots in the coming year. "We're not really looking for animation," Tennant said. "Budgets being what they are, we can acquire that more cost-effectively. But we'd like to get more real kids on the channel." She added that the channel was also looking for more factual entertainment for four- to nine-year-olds. "Things that have worked for us include Art Attack, Finger Tips and Prove It - shows where people are trying and doing new things," Tennant said. Tennant said the channel was also looking for more drama, quoting My Parents Are Aliens as an example of a show that had performed well on the network. However, she added that due to budget constraints and the cost of drama, this was likely to be as a coproduction. The channel would not be considering magazine-style programmes or anything too current, she said, because her programming needs to have a long shelf life due to costs.
