Bratz get dolled up for big screen

First they were a fashion doll line, then they starred in their own animated TV series, now the Bratz are heading to the big screen as stars of their own live-action feature film.

MGA Entertainment, Avi Arad Productions and Crystal Sky Pictures are teaming up to produce the film, which is scheduled for theatrical release in 2007. A screenplay, with the working title Bratz, is being written at the moment and production is slated to begin in late fall 2006.

Under the deal, Crystal Sky will finance the project, with producing credits going to Crystal execs Steven Paul and Benedict Carver. MGA's Isaac Larian and Avi Arad, CEO of Marvel Studios, will also act as producers on the film.

"One of my first loves was the doll industry. Bratz allows me to revisit the girl's business. The Bratz attitude and character will make an exciting and inspirational live-action feature," said Arad, whose producing credits include Spider-Man 2 and 3, X-Men: Last Stand and Fantastic Four.

A feature film joins a host of spin-offs from the Bratz franchise. In addition to the best-selling doll line, there is the animated series on 4KidsTV in the US, a range of DVDs, videogames and a Bratz magazine.

MGA, a consumer entertainment products company based in California, launched Bratz in 2001.
