Star TV scoops up spoon-bender contest MIP NEWS: SevenOne International, distribution arm of Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 Group, has sealed a deal for Turkey's Star TV to screen The Next Uri Geller, an interactive talent show featuring the titular psychic spoon-bender, C21 can reveal. The distributor has also agreed verbal deals with three more European broadcasters at MipTV – including broadcasters in the UK and Spain – to license the show. The show follows the concept of the original Israeli show, a reality talent contest that aims to find the next talented mentalist. "The show recently aired in Hungary where it went up against Harry Potter," Geller told C21. "It got a 45.1% market share. When we were told we were going up against Harry Potter we thought, well, nothing can beat that, so to do better was a huge surprise for us." SevenOne International MD Jens Richter added: "The show has interactive elements in two ways. There is the traditional interactive element, where people get voted off from the show, but then Uri interacts with the audience and gets people to bend spoons at home." Richter added that The Next Uri Geller was "a very controversial" show. "Some people just don't believe in mentalism," he said. Adam Benzine 8 Apr 2008 © C21 Media 2008
