Real Thrones finds Curious buyer

MIPDOC: US-based global SVoD platform CuriosityStream has acquired the second season of a French history doc from Paris-based indie Pernel Media.

The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe

The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe was originally commissioned by French pubcaster France 5 which recently renewed the show for an extended second season.

Pernel has sealed a deal for non-exclusive global SVoD rights with CuriosityStream, the factual-focused OTT service launched by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks.

The first four-part season previously sold to Foxtel in Australia and ZDF in Germany among others, while an English-language version of the series has been greenlit by A+E Networks’ History channel in the UK.

The second season will again use 4K drama reconstruction and this time focus on the struggles between Catholic and Protestant faiths and the relationships of rival European houses during the 1500s. The series will focus on the reign of ‘Bloody’ Mary Tudor, the re-establishment of Protestantism under Elizabeth I and the claim to the throne of Mary Queen of Scots.

France Télévisions Distribution holds the worldwide rights outside the UK. Pernel Media founder Samuel Kissous is the executive producer.
