Prix Jeunesse reveals best kids shows

Sesame Street, Horrible Histories and The Gruffalo have been named as three of the best children’s programmes of the past 50 years at the Prix Jeunesse International awards.

Sesame Street, famous for its celebrity guest appearances and classic characters, was deemed to have been the show that has had the greatest impact on kids since 1964 by TV experts.

However, the show lost out in the best non-fiction series category, in which relative newcomer, CBBC children’s sketch comedy Horrible Histories, was victorious.

Elsewhere, BBC/ZDF coproduction The Gruffalo took home the prize in the best fiction series of the past 50 years category.

The Magic Light Pictures toon, which focuses on a mouse’s journey through a wood and the creatures it meets there, beat off competition from the likes of Pingu and The Daltons.

Meanwhile, The Day I Decided to Be Nina, from Dutch broadcaster Vpro, and BBC preschool series Teletubbies were recognised on the night in the “most edgy” category.

The final round judging panel was made up of 100 international children’s TV experts, reviewing and voting on a total of 50 nominated shows. The winners were unveiled last night at the Prix Jeunesse International 2014 prize-winners gala in Munich.
