PBS lands D-Day special

US pubcaster PBS will air a factual special about the D-Day landings as part of a month of programming around the 70th anniversary of the Second World War battle.

D-Day 360 is being produced by UK production firm Windfall Films with Ian Duncan directing and will focus on events on Omaha beach during the operation.

The show will use data gathered though forensic laser scanning, 3D computer modelling and eye-witness accounts to bring the battle to life and focus both on the wider campaign and the stories of individual soldiers. It is slated to air on May 27 at 21.00.

Bill Gardner, VP of programming and development at PBS, said the combination of “amazing graphics and innovative statistics” would “shine a new light on this historic battle.”

The show is part of a number of programmes set to air on PBS, which will also include the three-episode Nazi Mega Weapons as well as Escape from a Nazi Camp, which explores revolts by prisoners of war.

Windfall Films, which was recently acquired by London-based Argonon, previously produced D-Day – As It Happened for the UK’s Channel 4.
