The German producer behind Amazon original You Are Wanted is lining up its own international VoD offering with China’s Sun Seven Stars Media Group.

Pantaleon Entertainment launched VoD start-up Pantaflix last year and is now planning to combine its infrastructure with the global media and investment assets of Sun Seven Stars CEO and co-chairman Bruno Wu for a global roll out.

Based in Germany and with offices in China and the US, the 50-50 joint venture is set to offer not only film and TV content but also “innovative and unique solutions worldwide in the retail consumer and business-to-business segments.”

The deal was signed this week in Shanghai by Pantaleon CEO Dan Maag and Wu.

“With Bruno Wu and his group of companies, we have found the best possible partner for taking on a leading position in the global VoD business,” Maag said. “This first German-Chinese joint venture in the VoD sector will have the capacity to change the global entertainment market for good.”

In addition to the Pantaflix infrastructure, which allows for the worldwide marketing of films, series and other content, the company expects to secure some 100,000 film titles in the next two years that it plans to commercialise with partners around the world.

Wu added that the joint venture would also deploy “the world’s first transactional platform as a service (PaaS) to tap the US$95bn film and TV B2B licensing market, currently all offline.” Wu stressed that there would be “no territorial restrictions anywhere for the intended use of the app.”

Pantaleon, whose main shareholders include actor and director Matthias Schweighöfer, produces feature films and scripted TV fare, including Amazon’s original series You Are Wanted, featuring Schweighöfer, who also produced and directed the hit show.

Wu’s vast global media portfolio includes New York-based Wecast Network and Redrock Capital in Hong Kong.
