OWN orders new Perry series

Discovery-owned US cablenet OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has commissioned Single Moms Club, a drama from Tyler Perry based on the forthcoming feature film of the same name.

The series is produced and directed by Perry and his Tyler Perry Studios. It’s the fourth project of his to air on the network following The Haves and the Have Nots, Love Thy Neighbor and For Better or Worse, which was picked up last February after its original channel, TBS, decided to pass.

Single Moms Club centres on a group of single women from different walks of life who bond following an incident at their children’s school and will premiere in fall 2014.

It joins previously announced documentary series such as Deion’s Family Playbook, Love in the City and Lindsay, which follows Lindsay Lohan’s return to public life after court-ordered rehab, in OWN’s 2014 line-up.

OWN made the move into scripted television by signing a deal with actor, director and screenwriter Perry in October 2012. His first foray into television came in 2007 with comedy drama House of Payne on TBS.
