Ovation orders four from FilmRise

Manifesto is based on a multi-screen film installation

MIPCOM: US arts-focused network Ovation TV has acquired a package of films from New York-based distribution company FilmRise for its linear service and newly launched Ovation NOW app.

Manifesto, starring Cate Blanchett; Marjorie Prime, featuring Geena Davis and John Hamm; documentary film The Secret Life of Lance Letscher; and The Glass Menagerie, directed by Paul Newman, are all included in the licensing agreement.

Manifesto is a feature based on the multi-screen film installation written, produced and directed by Julian Rosefeldt. It will debut on Ovation TV and Ovation NOW in 2018.

Marjorie Prime is an arthouse film based on Jordan Harrison’s play about an 86-year-old woman’s interaction with a holographic projection of her late husband. The film was directed by Michael Almereyda and will premiere on Ovation’s platforms in 2018.

The Secret Life of Lance Letscher tells the story of the collage artist and will premiere on Ovation and Ovation NOW in November.

Ovation will feature Newman’s version of Tennessee Williams’ 1945 novel The Glass Menagerie in its fall line-up to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary.

The deal for the four films was negotiated by Danny Fisher, CEO, and Melissa Wohl, head of sales at FilmRise, and by Scott Woodward, exec VP of programming at Ovation.

The news follows last week’s launch of Journy, a VoD service focused on cultural tourism being launched by Ovation in the US on Roku devices and the XUMO connected TV platform.

Content acquired for the new service includes Great Wide Open, a doc series about US national parks directed by Jared Leto; Reckognition Productions’ Droned, which follows adrenaline junkies using drone cameras; and The Wanderers, which profiles six Australian mural artists.

Ovation has also acquired the US linear and digital premiere rights to season 11 of The Artful Detective, produced by Shaftesbury and distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment. The show airs on CBC in Canada as Murdoch Mysteries.
