Orange creator inks Netflix originals deal

Orange is the New Black is among Netflix’s most popular originals

Global streamer Netflix has signed a multi-year original series deal with Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan.

Kohan, who also exec produces Netflix’s comedy original Glow, has played a central role since the company introduced original series in 2013, and will continue to produce new programmes and work on other projects under the agreement.

Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, noted that Kohan has “been with us from the beginning” and praised her commitment to pushing creative boundaries in programming.

“Bold, outspoken and totally fearless, Jenji has constantly raised the bar for storytelling at Netflix,” she said. “She possesses a rare and special talent to say what’s unspoken, choose the unexpected over the safe and drive the cultural conversation – and audiences love her for it.”

Last year, Netflix took home a host of gongs at the C21 International Drama Awards, including Best Returning Comedy Drama for Orange is the New Black.

It was an extra fillip for the dramedy, which was renewed for a further three seasons in 2016.

Elsewhere, Kohan is also slated to exec produce A+E Networks’ forthcoming drama American Princess for its Lifetime channel.

In other news, Netflix has commissioned an eight-part drama series based on Bard of Blood by Indian author Bilal Siddiqi.

The political espionage thriller is being produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Indian prodco Red Chillies Entertainment.

Set in India, the multilingual series will tell the story of an expelled spy who is recalled from his new life as a Shakespeare professor in Panchgani to save his country and long-lost love.
