Nine catches Rising Star

Australia’s Nine Network is negotiating a one-year option for the format rights to hot new international talent show Rising Star.

The one-year option gives Nine time to consider whether to adapt the format in Australia while keeping the property away from the struggling Network Ten and a less likely suitor in Seven Network, which has a full roster of entertainment fare and probably does not need another costly shiny-floor show.

If the network commissions the real-time singing competition, based on Keshet’s Israeli format, it will be produced by Keshet Australia, a joint venture between Keshet International and Racat.

Racat, the production group owned by David Haslingden, a former president and chief operating officer at Fox Networks Group, encompasses NHNZ, Australia’s Northern Pictures and Singapore’s Beach House Productions. Haslingden is also non-executive chairman of Nine’s parent, Nine Entertainment.

Alan Harris, a former head of production at Atlantic Film Group, joined Keshet Australia last year as head of scripted.

A third season of Shine Australia’s The Voice is expected to launch on Nine in May. The network recently decided not to renew FremantleMedia’s Australia’s Got Talent.
