Disney ties up content deals with Starz, Showtime

CBS-owned Showtime Networks has signed a long-term deal with US movie studio DreamWorks to air its features films up to 2015, while Starz Entertainment has entered into a similar deal with Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

The Showtime deal was brokered by Disney-ABC Domestic Television's parent The Walt Disney Company, which entered into a distribution pact with DreamWorks last month.

The deal will see big-budget Hollywood fare returning to Showtime after it lost contracts with Lionsgate Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and MGM when the three launched their own pay-TV film network.

Showtime Networks chairman and CEO Matthew Blank said DreamWorks, which has recently produced blockbusters such as Disturbia and Transformers, would provide a "supply of high-profile, commercially successful films" to the network.

It already has content deals with indie studios Summit Entertainment and The Weinstein Company.

Disney has also extended its feature film agreement with US pay-net Starz beyond their current deal, which expires in 2012.

Mouse House releases will air exclusively in standard and high-definition on the Starz, Encore and MoviePix networks, as well as via on-demand and IP services, until 2015.

The agreement includes live-action and animated films from Marvel Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney-Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures. It does not include releases from DreamWorks Studios, which stays exclusive to Showtime, and Miramax Films.
