BSkyB's ITV appeal thrown out The UK's Court of Appeal has rejected satellite broadcaster BSkyB's appeal against a Competition Commission ruling demanding it reduce its stake in terrestrial ITV. The decision relates to the 17.9% minority stake BSkyB bought in ITV for £940m (US$1.52bn) in 2006 – a move that blocked rival NTL (now Virgin Media) from taking control of ITV. The Competition Commission ruled against the move and ordered that BSkyB reduce its stake to 7.5%. In a statement this morning, the satcaster said: "BSkyB notes the decision by the Court of Appeal in relation to BSkyB's shareholding in ITV. We will review the judgement and order carefully and consider next steps in due course." Today's verdict, the latest in a line of appeals that has seen the matter dragging on for more than two years, means BSkyB must now decide whether it wishes to take the fight all the way to the Supreme Court. It has already been ordered to pay the UK government's legal costs, and another appeal would drive up its own legal costs further. Adam Benzine 21 Jan 2010 © C21 Media 2010
