Irons to star in Showtime's Borgias drama Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons has signed up to star in Showtime's upcoming drama series based on the notorious Italian Renaissance family, The Borgias, the US cable network today confirmed. Robert Greenblatt, president of entertainment at Showtime Networks, today announced the greenlight for 10 episodes of the period drama, which is being exec produced by Michael Hirst (The Tudors) with some episodes to be directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game). "Having blazed a trail with The Tudors, we wanted to continue to offer our audience a period drama as wicked, witty, and utterly compelling," said Greenblatt, citing Hirst's "flair for bringing historical dramas vividly to life for a contemporary audience." Like The Tudors, the series will be produced as a Canadian-European treaty coproduction, and will go into production this spring for a debut in early 2011. The series hails from DreamWorks Television and ImageMovers, and is unrelated to the other Borgias-themed drama series being developed by Chris Albrecht and Tom Fontana, with Canal+, Lagardere and Beta Film attached.
