MGM launches HD channel in UK MGM Studios, currently exploring sale or merger options as it grapples with huge debts, has found time to launch a linear high-definition channel in the UK. A 50/50 joint venture with the territory's biggest pay-TV platform, BSkyB, the MGM HD channel launched earlier today on satellite TV, with a selection from the MGM library. It airs 24/7.Highlights for the coming months include films from The Pink Panther series, Woody Allen titles such as Annie Hall and Manhattan, The Apartment, Network, The Russia House, Tom Jones, Moonstruck and The Fortune Cookie. "MGM anticipated the popularity of HD and has been committed to re-mastering many of the great MGM movies in HD for some time," said Bruce Tuchman, president of MGM Worldwide Networks. MGM said the move "marks a milestone for the studio," in that it is the first branded channel for the Lion studio in the UK. However, the MGM brand is on more than 20 channels in 130 countries. MGM HD is the 37th HD channel on the Sky platform. To view it, Sky customers need to subscribe to Dual Movies and the HD pack, or buy it á la carte for £5 per month.
