Sony snaps up Disney exec for digital drive Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) has poached one of Disney's key digital executives as it works to strengthen its own digital strategy in Europe. Damian Newton takes the role of VP of digital initiatives with immediate effect. Newton is tasked with building on existing product lines across video on demand, subscription VoD and electronic sell-through. He will also create and manage new Sony-branded digital projects such as Screen Gems and joint ventures like Film Flex. SPTI has closed several content deals across Europe in recent months, such as VoD agreements with Polish media group ITI Neovision and VirginMega in France. Newton will handle delivery of these initiatives.Previously, Newton was VP of sales, digital media, EMEA, at Disney-ABC International Television. During his time there he was responsible for sales, strategy and implementation of digital distribution rights. He was also formerly executive director of pay-TV/pay-per-view and VoD at Walt Disney Television International. Stuart Baxter, SPTI's executive VP of distribution, to whom Newton reports, said: "Damian has extensive experience of exploring and exploiting opportunities in new media and his knowledge is pivotal to our efforts to grow and evolve our business throughout Europe."
