BlinkBox opens for business Film and TV clip-sharing service BlinkBox went live today, at the same time signing new content partnerships with Raindance TV, X-Treme Video and Fortune Star. The start-up, which has been in beta testing since last autumn, claims to carry the web's largest collection of legal clips from 1,600 film and TV titles, including Scarface, The Matrix and South Park.Content partnerships are already in place with FremantleMedia, Warner Bros, Paramount, Discovery Networks, Aardman Animations and Universal. BlinkBox was set up by former European MD of AtomFilms and Channel 4 Services Michael Comish, as first revealed by C21, together with former Vodafone group head of content services Adrian Letts. MTV Networks' global digital media president Mika Salmi, founder of AtomFilms, is a member of the BlinkBox board, as is Scottish Media Group CEO Rob Woodward, a former colleague of Comish at C4. The company has backing from Arts Alliance Media, the firm behind online DVD rental business LoveFilm, and is positioning itself as a service that combines social networking with new revenue opportunities for the film and TV businesses. BlinkBox allows users to grab their favourite clips, personalise them with messages and forward them to friends' PCs and mobiles as 'blinks.' They can also watch, buy and rent classic and contemporary films and TV programmes. "We've had over a million film and TV fans pay us a visit so far, rediscovering old titles and searching out new ones," said Comish. "The idea of sharing, personalising and communicating with film moments has really begun to take off and is definitely a reflection of how communication is evolving in the 21st century."
