TBS Europe joins forces with Joost, YouTube

MIPCOM: Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) Europe has closed two significant content deals with internet TV service Joost and social networking and file-sharing site YouTube in Cannes.

The deals cover shortform content from TBS brands including CNN International, Adult Swim, Nuts TV and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

The partnerships with Joost and YouTube are the latest steps in Turner's strategy to complement its existing linear distribution with an aggressive expansion of its digital presence across emerging platforms, the company said.

Joost will make CNN and edgy entertainment brand Adult Swim available in Europe from this month. As well as on-demand access to CNN's shortform news and features, the deal also signals CNN's first major step into shortform content provision in Europe.

Turner programming, including CNN and Adult Swim, has been on Joost in the US since May. Joost was previously only available by invitation, but since October 1 has been opened up to the general public.

Adult Swim is being made available for the first time and on a free-to-air basis to a pan-European audience. It is already Joost's highest trafficked show on its US service. In Europe, Adult Swim will be available in weekly two-hour blocks of eight full-length episodes.

"Joost is an indicator of how the next generation will access and view television in the digital space," said Casey Harwood, TBS Europe's senior VP for digital media.

The deal with YouTube, meanwhile, involves short-clip content from Turner's news and entertainment portfolio launching this month to users across Europe. YouTube will house specially branded channels with content from CNN International, Adult Swim, TCM and the recently launched men's interest channel Nuts TV. A number of free video clips from Turner will be uploaded to YouTube each week.

"We're unlocking the value of our online libraries to engage consumers across a wider spectrum and we've invested in our channels, websites and mobile offering, so this is the logical next step in how we engage our users," said Harwood of the two deals.
