BBC multiplatform exec exits

The BBC multiplatform commissioning executive for entertainment and teen strand Switch has left ahead of the anticipated closure of the latter as part of the UK pubcaster's ongoing strategic review.

Jo Twist is joining Channel 4's education department to cover the commissioning editor's role, while incumbent Matt Locke fills in for head of cross-platform commissioning Louise Brown, who is away on maternity leave.

Twist's exit from the BBC comes amid a far-reaching review of the corporation's entire operations, including the plan to shut down Switch, plus a wider rethink of overall online content strategy.

Last month, BBC Children's head of interactive and on-demand Marc Goodchild moved over to a different role, helping steer the BBC's interests in the development of the Project Canvas IPTV initiative.

Concern has been growing within the UK independent production community that the proposed 25% reduction in web spend that BBC director general Mark Thompson outlined as part of the strategy review will hit them hardest.

Today, the BBC announced an online game based around the latest series of Doctor Who, plus a second installment of E20, the web spin-off of long-running soap opera EastEnders.

For more on the BBC's evolving online content strategy, including an interview with Vision multiplatform controller Simon Nelson, see the Spring edition of FutureMedia magazine. Pick up a copy at MipTV in Cannes next week or request one here.
