BBC, Arqiva to sell DTT slots
UK media regulator Ofcom has given its consent for the BBC and platform infrastructure company Arqiva to jointly sell multiplex capacity, enabling two new additional national TV channels to be broadcast over DTT.
Digital switchover is happening in the UK region-by-region through to 2012. As this happens in each area, unused capacity on the BBC's multiplex B used to broadcast high definition TV services becomes free, while certain new capacity on Arqiva's multiplexes C and D are becoming available due to technical upgrades.
Pairing the BBC's diminishing spare capacity with Arqiva's growing spare capacity enables two additional national TV channels to be broadcast via Freeview in the near future, rather than only after the completion of digital switchover, the companies said in a statement.
