Netflix in play with Sony PS3 US online video rental service Netflix has partnered with Sony Computer Entertainment America in a move that will see thousands of movies and TV shows streamed to the PlayStation3.Having initially lost ground to Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the effort to bring internet video to games consoles, Sony has stepped up its game this year, recently striking deals with the likes of cable players Showtime and Starz Entertainment. The PS3 has already proved a key driver for the BBC iPlayer in the UK and Netflix, though a more widely available service, will be anticipating a similar boost from the Sony tie-up. Netflix has an string of distribution deals in place with consumer electronics manufacturers, putting it on devices from partners including TiVo, LG Electronics, Roku, Vizio and Xbox as well – an arrangement Microsoft recently described as exclusive in the console space. After only three months of their partnership, Xbox users were responsible for creating over a million new Netflix accounts.Jonathan Webdale 27 Oct 2009 © C21 Media 2009
