Wire star cast in BBC crime drama UK public broadcaster BBC1 has commissioned a crime drama series starring The Wire actor Idris Elba. The London-born actor, who played Stringer Bell in US cablenet HBO's The Wire, will play the lead role in six-parter Luther. Elba plays a near-genius murder detective whose mind can't always save him from the violence of his passions. The twist is that the killers he is hunting will be revealed at the beginning of each episode, with the story following the interaction between Elba and the suspect. The series was created by novelist Neil Cross, who was also lead writer on the last two series of BBC1 spy series Spooks. Filming begins this autumn for transmission next year. Luther was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, controller for BBC drama commissioning, and Jay Hunt, controller of BBC1. The executive producer is Phillippa Giles and Katie Swinden is producer. The BBC has also unveiled a raft of daytime commissions for BBC1 and 2, including a series exploring the market for counterfeit goods in the UK.Leading the daytime slate is long-running culinary series Ready, Steady Cook, which returns for its 21 season. New to the schedule are Fake Britain (5x45'), which explores the multimillion-pound counterfeit business in the UK, and The Food Fighters, which uncovers the unsavoury secrets behind the food we eat. Fake Britain is due for transmission in winter 2009/10 and is being produced by indie Screenchannel. The executive producers are Emma Barker and Gerard Melling. The Food Fighters (10x45') is being made by True North for transmission in winter 2009/10.
