Disney ramps up Lat Am, Hispanic activities MIPCOM NEWS: Disney Media Networks Latin America (DMNLA) has announced that it will now distribute all Disney- and non-Disney-branded content to the Hispanic market within the US. It has also embarked on its first ever coproduction with Discovery in Latin America. The strategy started last year with the original production of Amas de Casa Desesperadas (Desperate Housewives) for the US Hispanic market, reflecting growing demand from viewers, networks and independent stations for original programming and tailored films, said Janice Marinelli, president of Disney-ABC Domestic Television. With DMNLA's expertise with Spanish-language programming set to play a key role in this part of the business, Disney is now expanding its programming brands across multiple territories and platforms. Freshly announced is DMNLA's first collaboration with Discovery Networks Latin America/US Hispanic (DNLA/USH), involving the coproduction of a local Latin American version of adventure reality competition The Amazing Race. The alliance marks the first pan-regional production of an original reality competition format for both companies. The show will air on Discovery Channel throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The Latin American version of The Amazing Race sticks to the original successful format but will also include contestants from across the region, including Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Venezuela. Production starts in January 2009, with the show due to start airing in late 2009. In further Latin American news for the Mouse, DMNLA has renewed and extended its deal with regional internet company Terra TV. Terra TV will be introducing the concept of internet catch-up TV to the region for the first time, offering free access to Lost (seasons 5 and 6), Desperate Housewives (season 5), Grey's Anatomy (season 5) and Scrubs (season 8) for seven days following their first airing on pay-TV, and later on-demand after their airing on free-TV. From 2009, the Terra TV service will also add new series to the line-up, including the first two seasons of Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters, Dirt, the first seasons of Samantha Who? and Six Degrees, and season 10 to 12 of Amazing Race. Movies include The Incredibles, Brother Bear, King Arthur, High School Musical 2, Princess Diaries 2, Treasure Planet, Cheetah Girls, The Sixth Sense, The Village, Cinderella Man and Flight Plan. The deal also covers Disney-branded content for Terra TV's Planeta Disney section, including the second seasons of Hannah Montana, Lilo & Stitch and the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Newcomers include Phineas and Ferb, The Suite Life of Zach & Cody, the first two seasons of American Dragon: Jake Long, Little Einsteins, The Emperor's New School and seasons 1 to 4 of Kim Possible. Moreover, the deal will also allow Terra TV to roll out new content on mobile phones and social networks, such as Orkut and Facebook, across Latin America in 2009. "This new deal will bring much more content for the internet user in Latin America," said Terra Latin America's president Fernando Madeira, who added that Terra TV's catch-up service would allow the company to leverage online advertising revenues in the region. In other global developments for Disney-ABC ESPN, South Africa's SABC has picked up a new free-TV package of 200 new and library episodes of ABC's daytime talkshow The View. Also included in the deal is Desperate Housewives (season 3) and multiple seasons of The Amazing Race. Gün Akyuz 15 Oct 2008 © C21 Media 2008 |
