Axe looms over Fox duo

Industry insiders have suggested that Fox is about to pull the plug on drama New Amsterdam and comedy Back to You, while the US network is expected to save most of its new series until mid-season, as it did last season.

Sources have suggested that sci-fi show New Amsterdam will not get a second season. The show averaged a so-so 7.15 million viewers on Monday nights this season, beating other Fox dramas K-Ville (5.52 million) and Canterbury's Law (6.15 million) but fell short of the recently renewed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (10.84 million).

Others claim that Fox is also about to drop Kelsey Grammer vehicle Back to You – a surprise since production has already started on the next season. The cost of the show, due to the talent involved, and limited results have been blamed.

As it prepares for its Upfront on Thursday, Fox has given a cast-contingent pilot order for mid-season consideration for Inseparable. Toby Stephens was previously cast in the hour-long drama, which at the time was contingent on creator Shaun Cassidy's latest draft of the script. Since then, Stephens's option has expired, forcing producers to search for a new lead.

ABC Studios will continue to produce the project, which follows a forensic psychiatrist who has an alternate personality as a result of a traumatic childhood event.

JJ Abrams' Fringe, which follows the exploits of a young female FBI agent who tackles unexplained medical and scientific phenomena, has also been given the green light. It is tipped to be paired with The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Monday nights. 24 and Prison Break are also expected back, perhaps on the same night, later this season.

Til Death is reportedly returning for a third season, believed to be on the condition that producer Sony Pictures Television finds a new showrunner suited to the show.

Also included in mid-season is Joss Whedon's Dollhouse; The Inn, a multi-camera comedy revolving around the less-than-glamorous staffers at a glamorous New York City hotel, created by Abraham Higginbotham; and animated comedy Sit Down, Shut Up.
