BBC2 infiltrates foreign tribes A group of British women is being given the opportunity to experience life in a native tribe, in a new documentary series commissioned by BBC2. In Woman of the Tribe (working title), six British women will spend a month living with some of the world's remotest tribes, in Greenland, Papua New Guinea, Africa and Northern Mongolia. The women will act as 'second wives' by shadowing the tribesmen's real wives in their daily duties, working, eating and sleeping exactly as the other tribal women do.Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, told the audience at last week's Sheffield International Documentary Festival: "The beauty of this series is that it is a modern format that plays to the traditional strengths of BBC documentaries, with the aim of bringing a challenging and unfamiliar world to a wider audience." The six-part series, due for delivery in 2007, will be produced by independent production company Diverse West, in association with Goldhawk Media. BBC2 previously brought distant tribes to the screen with Bruce Parry's series Tribe. Antony Reeve-Crook 9 Nov 2006 © C21 Media 2006 |
