Organisations push for NBCU probe A coalition of 23 US consumer groups, unions, watchdogs and cable platforms have written an open letter to President Obama and Congress, calling for a probe into the NBC Universal/Comcast merger. The groups – which include the Consumers Union, Free Press, Public Knowledge, the Parents Television Council, the Writers' Guild of America and the American Cable Association – have written an open letter urging lawmakers to take a "hard look" at the proposed merger, which they argue could have "a devastating effect on the media marketplace." Earlier this week the US Justice Department was named as the government agency that will scrutinise Comcast's proposed acquisition of a 51% controlling stake in NBCU on antitrust grounds. The Federal Communications Commission also needs to approve the deal. 8 Jan 2010 © C21 Media 2010 |
