TLC to gain weight-loss doc Broadcasters' fascination with overweight kids, mums and brides shows no sign of abating, as US cable network TLC has commissioned the latest in the genre, 650lb Virgin: The Weight is Over. The show is the follow-up to 650lb Virgin, which aired in July to TLC's highest ratings for a documentary so far this year, according to the UK prodco behind the show, September Films. The new show follows 31-year-old Arizonan David Smith, subject of the first show, after his extraordinary weight loss, dropping 28 stone without surgery. It premieres on November 29.The doc was commissioned by Rita Mullin, VP of development at TLC, and is produced by Emily Knight and Mark Henderson. The hour is being distributed by international sales company DCD Rights, sister company to September. With the international title 45 Stone Virgin, the original show has been sold by DCD to Virgin Media (UK), RTL (Netherlands), Discovery Europe (EMEA), Network Ten (Australia), MTV3 (Finland), NRK (Norway), TVNZ (New Zealand) and Viasat (Sweden and Denmark). "This type of human-interest film appeals to millions of viewers who live in the same world and come to experience similar challenges throughout their lives," said exec producer Sheldon Lazarus. Via September, Lazarus has this year produced four other hours for TLC: Child Frozen In Time, Conjoined Twins; Sister Bond, Marlie's New Face: Four Years On; and The World's Heaviest Man Gets Married.
