Gentleman adapts HG Wells for BBC4 BBC4 has commissioned a version of HG Wells' science fiction comedy The First Men in the Moon, which is being adapted by and will also star League of Gentlemen actor Mark Gatiss.Set in 1909, the story follows a scientist (Gatiss) who joins up with a young man, played by Rory Kinnear (Waking the Dead, Silent Witness), to journey to the centre of the moon with the help of a gravity-defying invention. Gatiss, who has also written two episodes of Doctor Who, is adapting the novel via his production company Can Do, which he owns with director Damon Thomas. BBC4 controller Richard Klein said: "The First Men in the Moon is a thoroughly modern classic, a witty and satirical piece of writing by one of Britain's foremost and original science fiction writers."It shines a light on man's natural desire to always get it wrong. I am delighted that Mark Gatiss has decided to bring this forgotten and yet wholly timely work to our screens." The First Men in the Moon was commissioned by Klein and BBC drama commissioning controller Ben Stephenson. The BBC's executive producer is Jamie Laurenson. Jules Grant 29 Oct 2009 © C21 Media 2009 |
