Edinburgh wins for BBC1, E4, The Wire EDINBURGH NEWS: BBC1 has won the award for terrestrial channel of the year at this year's Edinburgh International Television Festival, with E4 picking up the award for non-terrestrial channel of the year. BBC1 fought off competition from BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Five, while E4 fought off BBC3, Dave, FX and Sky1. "My summer just got a lot better," said BBC1 controller Jay Hunt, accepting the award for terrestrial channel of the year. "I can't tell you what this means - I'm incredibly grateful." It's the third year in a row that the BBC has won the award. BBC1's The Apprentice won terrestrial programme of the year, while FX's HBO acquision The Wire won non-terrestrial programme of the year. The Network and Fast Track Programme Award went to E4's The Inbetweeners. Accepting the non-terrestrial programme of the year award for The Wire, actor Dominic West (who stars in the show) contrasted the social message conveyed by the show's creator David Simon at the festival yesterday with James Murdoch's declaration in his MacTaggart speech that "the only reliable... guarantor of independence is profit," and said he accepted the award "in contempt of the Murdoch doctrine." He also joked: "I think this is the only award The Wire has ever won." Adam Benzine 29 Aug 2009 © C21 Media 2009 |
