Sky to launch second arts channel UK satcaster Sky is aiming to double its output of arts programming with the launch of Sky Arts 2, a bespoke channel that will reflect "contemporary and classical programming" and launch on October 20. The channel will run alongside Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts HD, cumulatively broadcasting 36 hours of arts programming a day. The restructuring will see Sky investing more in arts content, including more exclusive commissions and sought-after acquisitions, the broadcaster said. The channels' forthcoming autumn seasons will feature shows from contributors, including Mariella Frostrup, Tim Marlow, Brian Sewell, Vanessa Mae and Suggs; with subjects ranging from Francis Bacon and Edward Seago to Iggy Pop and Moby, as well as HD Metropolitan Operas and a nightly concert from performers such as Johnny Cash and The Who. Sky's entertainment MD, Sophie Turner, Laing said: "Arts is integral to the Sky platform and we now have the wealth and breadth of diverse arts content to warrant two dedicated arts channels. "At a time when other broadcasters' commitment to the arts is open to question, we firmly believe in giving our customers the best choice, all delivered in the highest possibly quality, HD. This is further evidence of our commitment to invest in the content that people love and demonstrates how pay-TV can meet viewers' individual needs." The channels will be reorganised with Sky Arts 1 broadcasting more contemporary and cult programming, such as live rock concerts and documentaries; Sky Arts 2 housing more classical art content, such as opera, classical music, fine art programming and dance performances; and Sky Arts HD broadcasting a selection of content from Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2.
