Banff's top gong honours HBO doc - again BANFF NEWS: The 29th Banff World TV Awards were handed out yesterday, and for the second year running a documentary commissioned by HBO took the grand prize honours, beating out worldwide drama, comedy and kids programmes. Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki’s White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took home the most coveted Rockie Award on Monday night here in Banff. Produced by HBO Documentary Films in association with Farallon Films, the film revisits the WWII bombings in Japan and shares stories culled from some of the 200,000 survivors, the only people to have lived to tell what it is like to experience a nuclear attack. This is the second grand prize Rockie to be scooped up by an HBO-commissioned doc in as many years. Last year, Spike Lee's When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts took home Banff’s top honour. During the awards ceremony, which was held at the Banff Springs Hotel, Sex & the City star Kim Cattrall was on hand to receive the NBC Universal Award of Distinction, while British comedy producer Jon Plowman accepted the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In all, a packed slate of Rockies were handed out, with hardware going to producers from several European and Asian countries. However, British, American and Canadian programmes dominated the awards field.
