MDA hails Singapore success in Cannes The Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore more than doubled its Mipcom 2006 sales at last month's MipTV, securing US$128m worth of coproduction and distribution projects. The figure compares with US$54m made by Singapore companies at Mipcom, and proves their ability to create exportable content with strong international appeal, according to the MDA. The deals include a US$100m collaboration between Singapore Technologies Electronics and Canada's Nelvana Studios to coproduce three animated TV series and 10 DVD movies. The projects will be completed over the next four years, and the first two DVD projects in the partnership will be Puff the Magic Dragon and Franklin the Turtle, both of which will cost US$5m-10m. BIG Communications has signed a US$6.5m collaboration with Australia'’s Flying Bark Productions and Canada's Thunderbird Films on 3D animated series Zigby. The series, based on HarperCollins' literary children's character, will be distributed internationally by EM.Entertainment and broadcast on Australia's ABC and Canada's Treehouse TV next year. Aside from animation, Upside Down Entertainment is working on a new US$5m adventure drama series with Korea's Dreamville Entertainment and India's Clapstem Productions, titled Asian Crisis Centre. Finally, Mega Media, content management company Six-Six-Eight and France's Project Images Films will also be collaborating on the first ever Singapore-France TV series, Déjà Vu. The US$4.1m youth fiction series will feature four episodes shot on location in Singapore. Christopher Chia, CEO of MDA, said Singaporean companies have "risen above their size and shown mettle to achieve success on the international stage." He added: "The newly established networks at MipTV provides more collaboration opportunities for exportable Singapore-made programmes and firmly establishes us as a major player in the international television and animation production industry and beyond."
