Sci-Fi UK unveils first drama production deal Signalling a shift away from its 100% acquired content strategy, the UK's Sci Fi channel has announced its first-ever scripted drama production deal. Ice Planet (22x45'), a CGI sci-fi drama series that "plans to rewrite the rules of science fiction and episodic television drama," stars Michael Ironside (Top Gun, Splinter Cell). The series follows a crew of scientists and soldiers on a maiden voyage into outer space in response to an alien attack. It is created by SpaceWorks Entertainment (Canada), and produced by Sci Fi and international partners. Costing US$29m, and filmed on location in both London and Canada, the series is due for delivery in October 2006. Former Sky One drama chief, Sara Johnson will be acting as consulting executive producer on the show to provide a UK and Sci Fi point of view. A number of British actors are also expected to be cast in major as well as cameo roles. The UK production deal was brokered by IBC's Jon Helmrich, on behalf of Canada's CHUM International, which holds worldwide distribution rights to the series. An Ice Planet video game is also being planned to run alongside the TV series. Commenting on the series, Sci Fi's programming director Jon Farrar said: "Ice Planet promises an original look and feel to sci-fi scripted drama. This production deal furthers our commitment to providing viewers with the best the genre has to offer and allows us to play an integral role in the development of what we hope will be a hit franchise in the UK and around the world.” Gün Akyuz 4 Apr 2006 © C21 Media 2006 |
