First HDTV channels arrive in France France's Canal+ Group has announced that its premium channel Canal+ will be available in HDTV from next month, while its DTH platform CanalSat will debut National Geographic Channel HD. The news follows rival DTH platform TPS starting the marketing of its own HDTV offering to subscribers last month. TPS launched its HDTV package in February, led by premium channel TPS Star, with some 50% of its programming now airing in HD, rising to 80% by September. The TPS package also includes some TF1 and M6 primetime shows, and big sporting events. In an attempt to keep up with the opposition, even overtake it, the Canal+ Group today said all programming from premium channel Canal+ will be available in HDTV from April 4 on CanalSat. The platform will also carry National Geographic Channel HD from June, "with more channels to join this year and next," the group added. The HD offer will be marketed at nine euros per month. On TPS, some 8,500 subscribers have already signed up for the HD option, with set-up boxes to be delivered from mid-April. The two platforms evidently continue to have independent strategies for the new technology, their planned merger still yet to be greenlit by the French competition authorities.
