Da Vinci Code inspires Opus Dei doc The upcoming Da Vinci Code movie will no doubt trigger many related documentaries, an early example being Decoding Opus Dei from Great Projects Film Company and Cable Ready. Plans at the New York prodco and the US distributor call for a TV special to debut in May 2006 in conjunction with the worldwide premiere of Ron Howard's Tom Hanks-starring feature film based on Dan Brown’s best-selling novel. The doc will explore the truth behind the real-world Catholic group that figures prominently in the novel, with Great Projects producers having been granted access to the religious order founded in 1928 by Josemaría Escrivá, a poor small-town Spanish priest. Great Projects' exec producer Ken Mandel said his show would "provide viewers with a fair and honest account of the organization” that featured in the novel, one of whose members was a multiple murderer monk. “Needless to say, the real Opus Dei is a bit upset," added Mandel. "We’re planning discussions with top US networks about running Decoding Opus Dei as a major event next May,” said Gary Lico, president and ceo of Cable Ready. “Due to the worldwide popularity of The Da Vinci Code and the film version’s global release on May 19, we expect to have several international broadcasters on board as well.” 19 Jul 2005 © C21 Media 2005 |
