MIP NEWS: Hot on the heels of early Russian sales reported yesterday, Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) today announced a raft of multi-genre sales across Central and Eastern Europe, spearheaded by Desperate Housewives.

The hit series will be rolling out in the Balkans and beyond, as part of wider multi-genre agreements sealed between Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) and fta channels Pop TV (Slovenia), Pink (Serbia), Rustavi 2 (Georgia) and Top Channel (Albania). A second hit series, Lost, also launches in Slovenia, Serbia and Albania. The news was released today by Tom Toumazis, evp and md EMEA, BVITV.

As part of individual multi-genre agreements struck with broadcasters, Slovenia's Pop TV package includes movies, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Bruce Almighty, along with series Lost, Alias, Extreme Makeover, and comedies Scrubs, Hope & Faith, 8 Simple Rules, and TV movies. Pink in Serbia has also picked up Lost along with the series, Life As We Know It, starring Kelly Osbourne.

BVITV’s first ever multi-genre agreement with Albania's Top Channel also includes Lost and Disney-branded kids programming (Kim Possible, Teamo Supremo), along with a raft of features and TV movies.

Further north, BVITV also announced its first ever multi-genre deals with fta broadcasters LRT (Lithuania), Kanal 2 (Estonia) and Latvian TV. The announcement came from Toumazis along with Elvyra Dunauskaite, head of acquisitions for LRT, Olle Mirme, programming director at Kanal 2, and Ilona Berzina, head of international relations at Latvian TV.

LRT's has licensed a number of features, library features, repeat features, TV movies, mini series, documentaries, Lost and The Amazing Race. Estonia's Kanal 2 has snapped up Lost, Desperate Housewives and The Amazing Race along with a host of features, library features and TV movies.

Latvian TV, meanwhile, has secured broadcast rights to Lost, Desperate Housewives, Life As We Know It, Grey’s Anatomy and Rodney, along with features, TV movies and a variety of Disney animation. Feature films in the Baltic deals include first run blockbusters such as Signs, The Santa Clause 2 and Sweet Home Alabama, starring Reese Witherspoon.

Commenting on the multiple deals, Toumazis said: “BVITV is delighted to be working with broadcasters in such dynamic territories. We’re looking forward to further growth in our activity across Central Eastern Europe.” Desperate Housewives has now launched in over 130 territories worldwide since its premiere in the US on ABC in October 2004.
