Sky1 gets weird for the autumn

UK cabsat network Sky1 has unveiled an autumn slate full of new US sci-fi and paranormal dramas, plus a couple of new domestically-produced factual formats.

Coproduced by Sky1, the new 13-part series remake of 1970s show Battlestar Galactica debuts internationally on the UK channel in October, and will also air stateside on Sci-Fi Channel. Sky Movies aired the new two-part miniseries in February.

Described as "a high-concept teen chiller", six-hour series Hex follows a group of teenagers living at an English college, in particular one girl's exploration of the supernatural and her own coming of age. The show is a copro between Sky1, Sony Pictures Television and Lis Murdoch's indie Shine.

The two new UK/US coproductions join previously reported American acquisitions: paranormal drama The 4400 and HBO Western series Deadwood. Both came to the UK through Paramount International Television. More Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle are givens.

New domestic commissions from Sky1 include TWI Factual & Entertainment's Road Raja, a factual format in which six minor celebs are flown to Mumbai (fka Bombay) to learn how to drive, Indian-style. After passing their Indian driving tests, and learning how to drive rickshaws and Indian taxis, the c-listers face a trans-Mumbai race.

The Sky1 channel has also okayed Granada's 1970s Office, in which two ad agencies compete for real-life advertising contracts, though one must only use 30-year-old office technology.

Also in the autumn mix are Rutger Hauer-fronted Shock Treatment, about human endurance; Ewan McGregor's motorcycle odyssey Long Way Round; Jodie Kidd-hosted The Ultimate Playboy; plus The Match from Endemol-owned Initial. This previously announced football reality show pitches a team of former pros against a team of members of the public.

Other new UK commissions include factual series Conspiracies, plus more episodes of science experiment Brainiac, soccer drama Dream Team and airport drama Mile High.

Tim Lovejoy, host of Sky Sports' Soccer AM show, also gets a regular Wednesday night slot on Sky1 to talk about football, music and mischief in Tim Lovejoy and the Allstars.
