New gig for Mote after Current closure

Jane Mote, the former MD of Current TV in the UK, has joined an online platform aiming to connect new filmmakers with commercial opportunities.

Mote has been appointed a non-executive director of The Smalls, which was launched in 2006 by branding agency Devilfish as an international showcase for short films.

The Smalls aims to provide tools that make collaborating and creating films easier and connecting filmmakers with brands and organisations that can help them achieve more recognition.

It will launch a new version of its website in May and Mote believes the expansion is a timely boost for independent filmmakers following Current’s demise in the UK.

She said: “This is an amazing concept – a cross between Vimeo and Linked In – that will offer genuine opportunities for new talent to make it big.

“The expansion of The Smalls is especially good timing as the closure of Current UK has left a gap for new filmmakers wanting a foothold in the professional film and TV world.”

Current broadcast for the final time earlier this month after Virgin Media dropped the channel from its platform and Sky withdrew its funding for the channel.

Mote joined Current last year from UKTV where she was director of factual and lifestyle.
