DRAMA SUMMIT WEST: SVoD giant Netflix is aiming to triple the number of exclusive, non-US original series on its service over the next two years.

The US-based streamer has so far commissioned around 30 series outside of the US, including The Crown in the UK, Marseilles in France, Club de Cuervos in Mexico and 3% in Brazil.

It is now aiming to be producing between 80 and 90 international original series per year over the next two years, Erik Barmack, VP of international originals, told delegates at C21’s Drama Summit West in LA today.

The majority of the programming will not be in the English language, said Barmack, who added that Netflix believes the global television industry is currently skewed too much towards Hollywood.

“There are 330 million people in the US. There are over seven billion people around the world. But if you look at what’s distributed, between 70% and 85% of television content is coming out of Hollywood,” said Barmack.

“Ten years from now, we feel that is going feel very antiquated. It can’t be the case that somehow Americans are 20 times better at finding stories.”

Barmack used his keynote [1] at C21’s LA event last year to single out Turkey, India, Latin America and South Korea as territories where the company was interested in commissioning content.

Since then, Netflix has surpassed the 100 million overseas subscribers and Barmack said it is looking to commission international content with well-known, local talent with strong social media influence attached.

The company’s upcoming international originals include Suburra in Italy, Dark in Germany, O Mecanismo in Brazil, with Narcos writer Jose Padilla attached, and The Witcher, which was announced [2] this week.

Barmack told delegates here in LA that the latter will see Netflix mix Polish and Hollywood writing talent to adapt the fantasy saga from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix’s VP of content, took delegates through the growing list of international coproductions the SVoD giant is producing with broadcasters.

These include Alias Grace and Anne With an E with CBC in Canada and numerous projects with the BBC in the UK, such as Black Earth Rising, Collateral, Troy [3] and Requiem.

Also on that list is The End of the F***ing World with E4 in the UK, The Spy with Homeland scribe Gideon Raff, and Girl/Haji with Jane Featherstone’s UK prodco Sister Pictures, which will be 30% in the Japanese language.
