Netflix to stream Atwood’s Grace

US SVoD service Netflix is set to launch a true-crime drama based on Margaret Atwood’s novel Alias Grace.

The six-part miniseries, which will share the same title, is being written and produced by Sarah Polley and will also air on Canadian broadcaster CBS. Netflix will stream it worldwide, with Halfire Entertainment attached to produce.

Alias Grace follows Grace Marks, a poor Irish immigrant and domestic servant living in Canada who, along with stablehand James McDermott, was convicted in 1843 of murdering her employers.

Published in 1996, the book was awarded the Giller Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

Netflix previously made a big splash in the true-crime genre with its 10-part documentary series Making a Murderer, which investigated the false rape conviction and subsequent murder trial of Wisconsin man Steven Avery.
