Netflix to retell Tales of the City

Netflix has confirmed a 10-part revival of a TV drama based on a series of books by Armistead Maupin.

Maupin’s Tales of the City is a Netflix original limited series that will be produced by Working Title TV and NBCUniversal International Studios.

Lauren Morelli will serve as showrunner and writer and Alan Poul is attached to direct. Morelli and Poul will also executive produce alongside Maupin and Laura Linney.

Based on Maupin’s novels, which have previously been adapted for the screen, this next chapter sees a woman return home to San Francisco to be reunited with her daughter and ex-husband 20 years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.

The first book in the series became a TV miniseries for Channel 4 in the UK and US pubcaster PBS during the 1990s. Showtime subsequently aired versions of the second and third titles in the series in 1998 and 2001, with Laura Linney in the lead role.

Linney and Olympia Dukakis will both reappear in their former roles in the series as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal respectively. Barbara Garrick will also return and Ellen Page joins the cast.

Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is expected to start production later this year and will debut on the streamer in 2019.

The executive producers from Working Title are Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Michael Cunningham will serve as a consulting producer.
