Netflix has ordered a sixth and final season of Longmire, the western it revived after its cancellation by US cablenet A&E two years ago.

The final season of the show will debut in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2017.

Longmire started life on A&E before being axed after its third run in 2014, when Netflix stepped in to take the drama into a fourth outing.

The series stars Robert Taylor as a sheriff in Wyoming and is based on the Walt Longmire books by Craig Johnson. It is produced by Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Horizon Television.

This week, Netflix hinted that it is moving closer to launching a download option for its content, bringing it in line with global streaming rival Amazon and Google-owned YouTube.

In related news, Netflix UK original series The Crown launches on the SVoD service tomorrow. The programme dramatises the life of Queen Elizabeth II and is produced by Sony-owned UK prodco Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures TV.
