US streaming giant Netflix is to revive Danish dramedy Rita with original broadcaster TV2 and support from the Copenhagen Film Fund.

Rita, about a politically incorrect primary school teacher, ran for two seasons on TV2 from 2012 and was produced by SF Film Production and written by Christian Torpe.

It starred Mille Dinesen as a teacher who lives with her three children in a disused janitor’s home next to the school where she works, and follows her attempts to juggle her career, family and relationships.

C21 understands the drama will return for a third season, with Netflix adopting a similar production model to the one used for fellow Scandinavian drama Lilyhammer, which it coproduced ^[1] with Norwegian pubcaster NRK.

It is so far unclear how much funding will be supplied by the Copenhagen Film Fund (CFF), which recently pumped US$1m ^[2] into the third season of The Bridge.

The show’s return marks the latest revival of a broadcast series by Netflix after it stepped in ^[3] on a fourth season of Longmire, after A&E cancelled the show.

The subscription VoD service adopted ^[4] the same tactic with the US version of The Killing, which originated on AMC, while rival Amazon recently revived BBC’s Ripper Street and Hulu salvaged ABC’s Selfie.

Rita was originally commissioned ^[5] as part of TV2′s focus on original Danish fiction, along with other series such as detective show Dicta (10×45’).

The show sold globally and also spawned a remake by Bravo in the US, adapted by Fox Television Studios.
